The
Cruiskeen of Maurice Davin
A
130 year old longboat was found in near perfect
condition in a shed and I was commissioned to
create illustrations for a small book published
by the Clonmel Boat Club. The televison programme
'Nationwide' covered the restoration of the boat
and interviewed myself for the programme.
This
longboat (38ft in length) was found in an old
cow shed after roughly 130 years. The boat is
a four oar sculling skiff of light clinker construction
and copper fastened. The builder was Maurice Davin,
Founder member of the G.A.A. (1842 - 1927)
"The
boat is a unique example of mid to late 19th century
lapstroke construction. The moulded treatment
of the steamed frames has not been documented
before. The level of craft skill in the artefact
is extremely high, … and is a craft of unique
rarity …" . Michael Kennedy, historian,
shipwright and boatbuilder
